Tie dye

Easier craft than you think. I did this before break with my students. They were excited about it. One student stood up on a table (I told him to get down). He was short so he wanted a better view. He said "Wow, this is like science" as he saw the dye hit the water and spread. I think that he wasn't sold entirely on art or making it, but at the end of the year he learned to appreciate it and get good projects out.You need:
- rubber bands
- white cotton t shirts
- dye
- gloves
- containers for dipping shirt or ketchup bottles for pouring
- warm water
- salt
- I did without the spray bottle. I think you might need them if he shirt is XXL because it will help absorb the dye better.
- I had students wait a day to wash the shirts out.
- I did this for their grad fest. I went to the downtown garment district and got $1 dollar shirts. I rubber banded the shirts previously so there was no hold up with that putting rubber bands on. I did it with a ten kids before and they almost drove me crazy!! Because they had trouble putting on the rubber bands.
- I separated L form M and Small shirts and by designs. Prep Prep! is key with working with large groups. It was fun.

pasadena Armory
I went to see the Pettibon exhibit a long time ago.
I was honestly disappointed with the Pettibon exhibit. It consisted of hanging flat screens that showed video of Venice Beach Bums hanging out by the rocks at the beach. Just hanging out. I tried looking at it as an artist, but Nah. It didn't work for me.
I liked the low rider bike that was on display in the upstairs gallery though.

Hermon Car wall
I went on an expedition a couple of weeks ago to find the Hermon Car wall by my house. Something cheap and easy to do. Well it wasn't easy. This wall was made out of car parts from the 1930's and 40's. It's become a landmark recently.
Here is more information from a blogger that made the trek to find it. He has better pictures and more information.

Ridin' Low in LA and high in Oakland: The Scraper Car
My friend says that Scraper Cars are common in Oakland. The birthplace maybe. I'm a low rider kind of person, but it is interesting to see these cars with giant rims on older model cars. The had to cut out around the tire to fit the rims. And the whole theme to some of the cars are kinda cool, but odd in the advertising Mountain Dew or Mc Donald's. But to each it's own. Check out the bikes.

A week in Oakland and San Francisco!

I visited my friend in Oakland and it is a hop and a skip from San Francisco. I arrived on Tuesday and my friend offered to teach me to DJ at a bar called KOKO Cocktails. She was awesome and patient as I sweated thought the whole thing. I think I did OK. I played 2 songs that I chose by mistake but she said that I did fine and invited me back to play again so I didn't kill it.
I played 60's girl groups, surf, Spanish 60's and 50's, British garage, the Creation, and other 50's and 60's compilations. She played soul and her friend played punk. An interesting mix, I might say which was the point of the night.
